In Nigeria, a lot of people are of the opinion that good-looking shoes are better suited to people with average or small-sized feet. In their minds, big feet equal horrible shoes. Guess what: THIS IS NOT TRUE!
Back when I was still in the university, I wasn't very keen about wearing shoes. I wore slides and slippers just about everywhere I went—to lectures, to church, everywhere. Now that I think of it, I might have attended a few social functions in these less-than-impressive casual footwear. My reason? Shoes just weren't a good fit for me. Because my feet were big, shoes appeared magnified every time I wore them, so that I assumed it was the first thing anyone saw when I approached them—my incredibly monstrous feet.
As it turned out, I wasn't altogether wrong in my assumption. But, indeed, I was wrong to think that the problem was my feet. Human beings are built in such a way that everything complements itself; nothing is typically out of proportion. If you're short, you get features that match your height—short arms, small palms, and feet. The same rule applies if you belong in the category around or above six feet. In this way, your shoes don't look enormous because you have the height (and perhaps, physique) for it.
What then was the problem with my feet? Now, this is where it gets tricky because, to begin with, the problem wasn't my feet at all. The real problem was my budget. My meagre budget determined the quality of shoes I shopped for and the stores where I bought them from. You see, these were low-cost shoes made from inexpensive and unflattering materials that invariably gave the finished product a shoddy look.
How did I realize this? When I got a job and shopped from more reputable stores, I quickly found that even I, at 6 feet 3 inches, could wear shoes and feel good about myself. I could wear shoes and not feel like a troglodyte. Today, shoes are a favorite accessory of mine and rather than feel embarrassed by them, I wear them to look dapper.
Do you feel awkward when you wear shoes? Does it feel like something isn't quite right, or like you can hear people murmur and giggle about their odd size? Do they feel too tight around your feet, or too loose? Do you feel compelled to hurry home and discard them? Then, consider shopping right today. Get the best deals on formal and casual footwear.
